Dr. David M. Judd
Medical Physicist

Just twenty years ago, many cures we now consider common would have been nothing short of miraculous. Much of the success in modern medicine comes from increasing sophistication in science and technology.

In cancer care, many consider clinical medical physics at the epicenter of
these changes. At North Star Lodge, the person bringing this technical
sophistication to radiation treatments is Medical Physicist David Judd.

Dr. Judd consults with the Memorial Cancer Care team, directs dosimetry and treatment planning activities and selects and commissions new products and equipment. Working with the linear accelerator, Judd skillfully ensures accurate treatments - accuracy essential so that radiation therapy relieves pain, controls tumors and, possibly, saves lives.

While radiation has been used for more than a century, today's pinpoint
accuracy radically increases patient's chances of survival.

Medical physics is one of the most precise health sciences. Working closely
with the rest of your cancer care doctors, the medical physicist David Judd
works hard to achieve an important goal --- the best possible treatment for
our patients.

Dr. Judd obtained his Bachelors degree in Physics from Syracuse University
in Syracuse, NY. He received his Ph.D. and Masters degrees in Particle
(Nuclear) Physics from Rice University in Houston, Texas. He is certified
in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology.

While at Rice, he worked with accelerators that were half a mile long to one
that was four miles long. Using computers then that were less powerful and
sophisticated than the ones he uses today, he modeled the radiation beams from these accelerators and modeled the experimental apparatus to conform the theories of Nuclear Physics to what was actually occurring in Nuclear Physics experiment.

In 1980, the US Army offered Judd a direct commission as a Captain in to
provide medical physics support at Madigan Army Medical Center on Fort Lewis in Tacoma, WA. In 1985, Judd joined the Northwest Medical Physics Center to provide medical physics support to Memorial Hospital. He has been fortunate enough to be a part of the transfer of radiation oncology from Memorial's main campus to the North Star Lodge campus.
